Hip Hop Dancing – sports history

Hip-Hop is not a dance style of its own but consists of many styles. These originated mainly in the 1960s and 1970s in the US as part of the hip-hop culture.

The culture of hip-hop developed in the poorer neighborhoods of major US cities, such as New York and Los Angeles. Afro-American and Puerto Rican teenagers invented a new genre of music
: hip-hop. So-called DJ’s put the new music on the streets. The different dance styles, such as break dancing, popping, locking and many others, were therefore first danced on the street and had no set rules. They are still called street dance to this day.

In the 1980s, hip-hop became increasingly popular with white teenagers and wealthier parts of the United States. The movie “Flash dance”, released in 1983, made hip-hop dance styles famous worldwide. Around the same time, the first professional hip-hop dance groups emerged.

Meanwhile, hip-hop dancing has become a sport of its own, and many dance schools in Germany also offer hip-hop dance classes. Various German and international associations also organize regional, German, European and World Championships, where you can compete alone or in dance crews with dancers from all over the world.

Salsa Dancing

What is salsa?

As a salsa, both a music genre – the so-called salsa music – as well as a Latin American dance, which is danced to this music, called. Its origins are this dance in North and Central America of the 1960s.

Characteristic of salsa dancing is the cheerfulness of the dancers and the erotic hip movement. But Salsa means much more than just a dance and a musical genre, it’s a unique way of life, a whole subculture that is becoming more and more prevalent in all parts of the world.

In the Salsa styles one distinguishes mainly between salsa “in the circle” and “on the line”. According to a survey, about 50% of salsa dancers dance “in circles”. This form of dance is primarily for the Cuban Style. Around 42% dance “on the line”, a form found in the Salsa New York style , the Puerto Rican style and the LA style . A share of 8% cannot completely assign the own dance style.

However, the basic steps of salsa dance are all the same. The smaller or larger deviations of the different styles from each other can be learned quickly, once you have mastered the basic technique of salsa.

What makes salsa so special?

Salsa is an excellent counterweight to everyday life. Salsa dancing stands for relaxation, joie de vivre, community, sensuality and eroticism . Most people who start to dance with salsa are fascinated by the positive charisma emanating from the music and the dancers. And for the vast majority of beginners, salsa is very attractive after only a short time – they quickly become “salsa-addicted”. Anyone who dances salsa feels happy and happy, is always on the move and can relax well. And last but not least, you’re a little bit proud of yourself – and that can lead to truly euphoric states!

Another advantage of salsa is that the dance partners change frequently. So you get to know many new people quickly. It is common for a man or a woman to have between 10-30 different dance partners on a salsa evening. Of course, there are also couples who just like to dance together: that too is always respected.

If you were to describe the feelings of salsa dancing in simple sentences, you could say that salsa releases endogenous endorphins . To put it a little more succinct, one can also say: “Salsa dancing is high without drugs.” According to a study by Wieschiolek, salsa dancing also has other positive effects on people, such as an improved self-esteem, a positive change in attitude towards life and increased fitness.

How does a salsa dance class work? Do I have to bring a dance partner?

No. You do not have to bring a solid dance partner. A rotation of the dance partners is used by the dance teachers to reduce tension and to practice dancing with as many partners as possible – after all, each individual has their own individual movements. The sooner you practice adapting to different partners, the easier it will be to dance in salsa clubs.

Of course, salsa dance classes not only serve the pure learning of rhythm, steps and figures, but also provide opportunities for contact. Many dance students exchange their mobile numbers during dance classes and arrange to attend salsa parties together. On longer visits to dance classes in the same dance schools, there are sometimes cliques of like-minded people who become friends and go to parties together or do other activities. Salsa is not just a pair of sports, but very sociable.

You are interested in salsa but are shy?

Because salsa makes it easy for people to get in touch, this scene is not only interesting for extrovert people , but also for shy people . The body contact is very common and is quite casual and natural, because it arises from the music out. Even shy people often lose their shyness after a few weeks. Also the self-confidence is strengthened by success experiences, which adjust automatically when learning the dance.

How long does it take to learn salsa?

Here we have to differentiate between men and women. That sounds unfair, but it’s easy to explain that the men not only have to master the steps, but also have to be able to lead the partner. For women learning is therefore very fast. Men need between 3 and 9 months , depending on the frequency of training , until they can safely compete on the dance floor. Above all, though, salsa dancing should be a pleasure! And: First, no master has fallen from the sky. Second, you always learn, even if you think it’s not progressing!

And because a few numbers are always good: On average, 23% of the salsa dancers dance only for 6 months – so as a beginner, you really do not have to hide on the dance floor. Another 27% have been dancing for 6-12 months. Only 18% of salsa dancers have more than four years of experience, another 17% have spent about three years, 15% have two years experience in salsa dancing.

Tap Dancing

In tap dancing, every dancer is also a musician at the same time. Metal plates on the soles of the shoes ensure that each step creates its own sound. The possibilities are as unlimited as with drums: fast and slow rhythms can be quilted, loud or quiet, some are spontaneously improvised, others are painstakingly choreographed. Tap dance suits swing and pop music, salsa, waltz, jazz or blues. It can be danced alone or in a group. Everything is possible as long as it is fun.

Who should that be good for?

Tap dance is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. There are films of over 90-year-olds who are still quilting at breathtaking speed. But an hour of tap dancing can be as exhausting as an hour of jumping rope: There are various techniques, for example, in which the feet touch the ground for a few milliseconds and thus produce very specific sounds, which has the effect of a magic trick for outsiders. Some of these jumps have to be trained for years – and after each training session, the dancers are sweaty. According to sports scientists, tap dancing also promotes brain activity and creativity.

What does this cost?

Tap dance studios usually offer a free taster lesson for which you do not need your own quilting shoes. Often thereafter a contract with three months’ notice is closed, per month about 50 Euro course fees are due. Shoes for beginners are available from about 30 Euros, better models cost around 100 Euros. Typical of the tap dance scene is that professionals from all over the world travel around and teach workshops in various studios, for which one can register individually. These usually cost around 70 Euros for four hours of lessons.

What’s fun about it?

To learn new choreographies or sequences of steps, you have to concentrate heavily – which has the effect of forgetting everything else around you. There is only the rhythm, the music, the movement. And the joy when everything finally fits together.

The teacher pretends that the students are completing – this is only part of the tap dance. It gets really interesting when improvising, preferably with a live band. What could be better than dancing at the same time and being part of the band?

Tap dancing is like a language that is understood internationally. Joy, grief, anger – every feeling can be packed into a rhythm. Already in the 19th century, dancers in the US delivered themselves on the streets “duels”. Even today, wordless dialogues are the highlights of every jam session.

Whether in Europe, Australia or Africa – who takes his tap dance shoes, will find like-minded people everywhere. The scene is small, but warm. And not only when improvising newcomers are welcome. There are choreographies that know and dance tap dancers around the world.

Tap dancers make frequent use of syncopation. Choreographies typically begin on the eighth stroke, or between the eighth and first counts. Another aspect is improvisation. This can be done with any music and follow the blows provided or without musical accompaniment, if not known it is danced a cappella. Hoofers are tap dancers, who dance only with their legs, making a louder, grounded sound.

This kind of dancing tap, also called “rhythm tap”, is typically found in poor cities or areas. Most hoofers, such as Jr. by Sammy Davis, Savion Glover, and Gregory Hines, are black dancers. Dancers like Fred Astaire provided a different look, from the ballroom to tap the feet when dancing, while Genne Kelly used his extensive and extensive ballet training to incorporate it and create his own style. There is a wide variety of styles and techniques in the tap that dance different dancers and that is why there are different ways to name their steps and different ways of teaching.

The Waltz

Everyone has seen the Viennese waltz before. Whether at a wedding, a ball or at the 379th repetition of Sissi on TV. The distinguishing feature of the Viennese Waltz are its sweeping turns. After every three steps, the pair has rotated 180 degrees, so half a turn made. The Viennese Waltz is based on the 3/4 time, whereby a basic step consists of six steps, thus comprising two full bars.

The Viennese waltz knows no figures, like other standard dances, but only right or left turns. It makes you sweat quickly. So that one of the turnery does not get dizzy or bad, you occasionally take a short break or turn in the opposite direction. A bit of practice is needed so that you do not have to do the opening dance of your wedding as a humming top on the floor and then have to rush to the bathroom.

When you start practicing, do not look at your feet while dancing, but in the eyes of your partner. The clockwise rotation of the Viennese Waltz is much easier to learn than turning to the left. Pay attention to a tight posture, slightly offset to the left against each other. If you have the step sequence of the Viennese Waltz (see below) at some point in the blood, you should also move harmoniously with the music. Use your whole body and try to hover over the dance floor. Of course, that does not work right away, but practice is also the master here. Watch for even turns and move your center of gravity across the dance floor at a constant height. The larger forward step easily goes to your knees and tilts your body slightly.

Dance steps right turn for the ladies:

1. Starting position with a view in the opposite direction and beginning with the left foot

2. Step left to the left in the left, turning the body clockwise

3. Keep turning at a steady pace and then place your right foot sideways to the dance direction

4. Pull the left foot to the right and fully load, leaving the right foot free (a quarter turn is done)

5. Larger forward step obliquely forward

6. Keep turning at a steady pace and then place your left foot sideways to the dance direction

7. Pull the right foot to the left and fully loaded, leaving the left foot free (half a turn is done)

8. Look in the dance direction and start again with the left foot – now it starts again at 2, only this time first a bit backwards in the counter-dance direction, until the starting position is reached again (a complete turn is done)

Dance steps right turn for the men:

1. Starting position with a view in the dance direction and beginning with the right foot

2. Greater forward step diagonally forward with right between lady’s feet

3. Keep turning at a steady pace and then place your left foot sideways to the dance direction

4. Pull the right foot to the left and fully loaded, leaving the left foot free (a quarter turn is done)

5. Step with left to diagonally left behind

6. Keep turning at a steady pace and then place your right foot sideways to the dance direction

7. Pull the left foot to the right and fully load, which releases the right foot (half a turn is done)

8. Looking in the opposite direction and starting again with the right foot – now it starts again at 2, only this time in the counter-dance direction, until the starting position is reached again (a complete turn is made)

Before the rotation starts, a few times it will be darkened. This makes the entrance easier. However, this should not be done too properly, as at the Oktoberfest, but with a gentle sliding movement. Make a slight sideways step with left to left and load that foot with full weight so that the right foot lifts off easily. Then do the same with the other, the right foot. The men are the other way round. By the way, three strokes are counted on a stroke.

Dance on Talent Shows

One of the best things, in my opinion, to come out of all of the talent style shows that are on TV nowadays is being able to see all of the different types of dance that are out there today.  I didn’t see this when it originally aired but I have watched it on YouTube several times since then.  You should definitely take a look!
